The name of Jesus
December 4, 2018
Since Christmas is a celebration of Jesus’ birth, let’s look at the Scriptures and see who is Jesus. The Bible says:“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:18-21 KJV) In this passage God tells Joseph to give Him the name Jesus. The name of Jesus is significant because of Who He is …God our Savior. As we continue to read the passage in Matthew, it says: “Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:22-23 KJV) Jesus came to earth as a man so He could die in our place and become our Savior. Jesus is divine by nature but did not selfishly demand His divine rights. He humbled Himself and gave up the glory of heaven to become a human. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:5-8 KJV) When we hear the name Jesus, let it remind us of His supreme example of humility and may we strive to show the same humility. The Bible goes on to say this about His name: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 KJV) His name is to be glorified above every name. We should praise and glorify the name of Jesus because He is our Savior.
