The authority test!
January 8, 2019
There are many things we can change in 2019 but the best changes we can make are changes that will make us more Christ-like. God’s Word is our authority but we are still human and many times we let our interpretation or preconceived ideas get in our way of knowing the truth. As we go through our day we need to listen for God to speak to us through His Word and by His Spirit. We put out the Spirit’s fire when we do not listen and obey. The Bible says: “Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-24 KJV) If we believe something or are doing something that contradicts Scripture we must change our thoughts and actions to line up with what the Scripture says. We say that God’s Word is the ultimate authority but is it really? There is a “religion” many refer to as “humanism”. Humanism is where humans are over everything including God. We may be influenced by humanism without even realizing it. God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things and is the ultimate authority in all things. The Bible says: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJV) Most Christians are familiar with these verses but do they really believe it. The Bible goes on to say: “I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” (2 Timothy 4:1-4 KJV) God determines what is right or wrong but people often decide they know what is right and wrong. God’s Word is what we need to walk in the ways of the Lord. If we want to train our children to walk with God, then we need to use God’s Word to do that. There are many books out there that tell us how we should raise our children, how we should live our daily lives but if they don’t use God’s Word as the authority, they are useless. As we look at our world, we see people are more interested in their own desires and that is their authority. This is what is called “humanism”…people sit in authority over God. Have you let “humanism” slip into your life without realizing it? Maybe it’s time to do an “Authority Test” and see who really is your authority?
