Many ask how they can discern God’s will in the decisions they have to make every day. The answer is simple. “Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.” (Psalm 37:3-6 KJV) Trust, faith, perseverance in the ways of God will be rewarded. When we are faithful to what God has revealed in His Word, put our trust in Him and commit our ways to Him, He will reveal His will in the decisions we need to make every day. Delighting ourselves in the Lord is loving Him and obeying Him. Knowing God’s will sometimes is difficult because it requires patience, which most of us don’t have a lot of. The Bible says: “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.” (Psalm 37:7-8 KJV) We want to know ALL of God’s will at once, but God doesn’t usually reveal His way like that. God reveals His will to us as we need it…sometimes one step at a time…allowing our faith to grow in between each step. And as we wait for further direction from God, we should continue to seek His will and be busy doing the good that we know we ought to be doing. “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:13-17 KJV) We must live day by day seeking God’s will and making plans only as He leads. As God reveals His will to us, then we must commit ourselves to do it. It is important to know that we are not alone in trying to understand God’s will. God has given the Holy Spirit to every believer. Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” (John 14:16-17 KJV) The Holy Spirit speaks to us, leading and guiding us into all truth. Jesus said, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” (John 16:13-14 KJV) As believers, we do not know everything we need to know, but God does. He will give us the knowledge we need, when we need it through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will faithfully guide us into the will of God. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13 KJV)
