Thank you for your interest and prayer. There are a lot of entities that need prayer. Nancy needs prayer as she carries the load at home. Chapel Baptist Church needs prayer. The ministry in India needs prayer. These needs alone should continue to keep your prayer life busy for the next ten days.
We have now finished the second day of class. I am teaching the book of Hebrews in which the author sets forth the thesis that Jesus is better than anyone and anything. He is writing to professing Hebrew Christians. They have heard and understand the gospel to varying degrees. Some had indeed accepted Christ. However, persecution was sweeping the world. The lives of those he is writing to have become difficult. Those who were truly saved were in danger of pulling back from their commitment to Christ. Those who were unsaved, but were considering Christ, were in danger of rejecting Christ and going back to Judaism. The author puts together a clear and powerful argument that Jesus is better than anyone that they could turn to besides Christ. However, the devil is a liar and a deceiver. He works hard to cloud peoples judgment regarding the realities of life. Some exchange the blessing of God upon their lives and usefulness to Him for what Solomon called “vanity” which means emptiness. Some exchange eternal life for getting all they can and canning all they get during their life on earth. The students seem to be getting it and we are making good progress. I am teaching for the whole day the first three days and then I will teach half days.
I often begin the class by asking a couple of the students to share a testimony of what God has been doing in their lives and ministry. Today, Gururaja told of a set of circumstances that gave him the opportunity to visit an unsaved family of five. They told him that they had invited many in before him and asked them how to get to heaven. They all told them that they had to do this or do that. None opened the Bible. Guru as we call him. Actually, I refer to him as Eddie Munster because he looks like a grown up version of Eddie Munster. Anyway, he opened the Bible and went verse by verse through and outline that he had learned in a class I taught called, “The Doctrine of Salvation”. He talked about sin. He talked about God’s judgment of sinners. All the time reading the scriptures to them. Then he paused, and said to them…that is a big problem. They looked back at him almost in desperation. He asked, “Would you like to know the good news?” At that point in his testimony he got all choked up. Tears filled his eyes…his voice cracked…and he said, “They said yes!” He was standing about four feet in front of me with his lips quivering and his voice cracking. He then showed them the provision God made through Christ for people from the Bible. Their response was that was the first time anyone had answered their question about going to heaven from the Bible. Then…all five in the family received Christ. Guru ended by saying, “I learned all that in this school”.
We were also talking today about the verse in Hebrews that teaches Jesus came to deliver people from the fear of death. Fear of death is universal. It knows no racial, cultural, religious boundaries. I reminded them that God gives us the grace we need…when we need it. I told them that God gives dying grace to dying people. I followed that up with the story of a Christian woman I met in an assisted living facility a few years ago. She was just over 100 years old. I asked her how she was doing and she said, “No, don’t do that. I am almost there and I don’t want you to spoil it!” The students liked that and one told me after, “we need to hear more of that”.
Thank you for your interest and prayer.
