Are you of the world?
We often hear the phrase, “Christians are in the world but not of the world.” The Greek word for world is “kosmos” and often refers to the ungodly who inherit the earth and are ruled by Satan. The Bible says: “We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” (1 John 5:18-20 KJV) Christians live in the world but are not a part of the world ruled by Satan. Christians are no longer ruled by sin. Christians are being change into the image of Christ, therefore, we become less interested in the things of the world as we mature in Christ. As said before, Christians are physically present in the world, but are not part of its ways. Jesus said, “I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.” (John 17:14-18 KJV) Christians should be set apart from the world. Others should be able to know that we are a Christian by the way we live…the things we say, the things we watch, the way we dress and so on. When you walk down the street do others know that you are a Christian just by looking at you? Many times people say they are Christians and yet don’t look any different than those who are not Christians. If we are going to be holy and live a holy, righteous life, then we need to be set apart from the world. Throughout the Bible Christians are told not to do what the world does. One of my favorite passages is found in the book of Romans. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2 KJV) Many people say they don’t understand the Bible. Do they not understand or they don’t want to understand it? In the passage above, it is very clear that Christians are not to do what the world does but be transformed by renewing our minds by being in God’s word daily and allowing the Holy Spirit to direct our lives.
