Are you near-sighted and blind?

Are you near-sighted and blind?

When I stopped sending the devotions due to health issues, we were talking about what the Bible says about the word “holy.” Some people wonder if it is even possible to be holy since only God is holy. Not only is it possible to be holy but it is a requirement for every Christian to be holy. The Bible says: “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.” (Hebrews 12:14-17 KJV) The life of a Christian is characterized by a peaceful spirit and a holy life. We know that God is holy and we can only become holy in a relationship with Christ. We should pursue after holiness if we want to mature spiritually. The Bible says: “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:3-11 KJV) God has not only called us to be holy but He has also given us the resources we need to live a godly life. Christians are encouraged to add godly characteristics to their lives so they will grow spiritually. Remember, the word “holy” means to be set apart from the world. Before we became a Christian the Bible says: “For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.” (Titus 3:3-8 KJV) To be given God’s Spirit is to receive a new life…a new standing with God. The Holy Spirit’s power changes foolish, disobedient people into kind, loving people. The Holy Spirit regenerates the life of every Christian. Salvation does not occur without the work of the Spirit in our lives.
