Only God is holy!
As we try and understand what it means to be holy, we’ll look at a few Scriptures about God’s holiness. In Hannah’s prayer she said: “There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.” (1 Samuel 2:2 KJV) Only God is holy. Another passage says: “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” (Isaiah 6:1-3 KJV) Humans and angels are different from God. He is pure, without sin. We cannot say it too often, Only God is Holy! His holiness is seen in His attributes. His love is a holy love, His mercy is holy mercy, and even His anger and wrath are holy anger and holy wrath. This is difficult for humans to understand just like God is difficult for us to understand completely. We know that only God is holy so what does it mean for us to be holy? In the passage in 1 Peter where it says: “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16 KJV), it is talking specifically to believers. Believers are set apart from the world unto the Lord. We need to be living by God’s standards, not the world’s standards. God isn’t calling us to be perfect, but to be distinct, different from the world. We can only become holy from a right relationship with God, accepting His gift of eternal life. So, we must first make sure we are born-again believers. (See John 3). If we are truly believers, then we will be set apart from the world. We should never compromise or try to blend in with the world. We need to live according to God’s Word allowing God’s holiness to shine through us.
