Love as God loves us!

Love as God loves us!

As we have looked at many Scriptures regarding faith, hope and love, we have learned that all three are very important and necessary in a Christian’s life. However, the Bible says: “…but the greatest of these is charity.  (1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV) The Bible also tells us that God is love. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. (1 John 4:7-8 KJVEverything God does is done in love. There are several different words for “love” used in the Bible so it can be hard to define love because it depends on the context as to what love is being used. Love can be sexual love, brotherly love, and other types of love but only one kind of love demonstrates God’s love and that it a self-giving love that seeks the good for others…it is not selfish or self-seeking. The love that God demonstrates is a love that loves the unlovableGod’s love is seen in what He does. The Bible says: And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (Ephesians 2:1-5 KJV) We don’t deserve God’s love or such a great sacrifice but the Bible says: But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 KJV) The Greek word for God’s love is “agape” and is different from other types of love. It does not refer to romantic/sexual love or friendship/brotherly love but it is a love that involves faithfulness, commitment and is described in 1 Corinthians 13. Agape love is the love of God and from God. The Bible tells us that God is love. Agape love is also used to describe our love for God. We are to love others with agape love whether they are believers or enemies. Jesus said: But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44 KJV) Agape love is not based on our feelings but our love for God and desire to do His will. Agape love does not come naturally to us. It can only come from is Source. To be continued…
