The Love of God!
Every word in the Bible is important but we have been looking at three very important words that must be in every believer’s life…Faith, Hope, and Love. Without faith we cannot be saved or please God and there can be no hope. Now as we look at love, the Bible says: “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” (1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV) So what does it mean that love is the greatest of these? Without love, there can be no true faith and certainly no hope. Without love, anything we do in the name of “religion” is nothing but an empty religious ritual. The Bible says: “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:2-3 KJV) There can be no genuine biblical faith or hope without love. The Bible has so much to say about love so let’s begin with the verse that even unbelievers know. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 KJV) This is the love of God. Christ’s death demonstrated God’s absolute love for you and me. God made the ultimate sacrifice so we could have salvation. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 KJV) Love is not defined by words but by the act of God in giving His Son to die on the cross for us. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:9-10 KJV) God’s love is the source of our love. “We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.” (1 John 4:19-21 KJV) We may say that we love God but if we don’t love others, God calls us a liar. We may fool others, but we can never fool God. Without love, there can be no faith or hope. And without God’s love, we cannot love. The Bible says: “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” (1 John 4:8 KJV) God is love and He showed us how much He loves us at the cross. May we demonstrate our love for God by serving Him and obeying His Word.
